
I’ve been fascinated with sub-Sahara Africa since I was a child.
What the West has done and is still doing to these peoples is so terribly reprehensible.
Africa has a spirituality, an elan, a freshness of viewpoint that is sorely lacking in the West. It has most of the natural resources left on the planet. It has countries with the worst poverty, famine, wars, lifespan and education rates on earth.
As a college student I wanted to join the Peace Corps and go to Africa. I can’t remember why I didn’t do so. I’m sorry I let that opportunity pass me by.
I follow the activities of the Scientology churches and the Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour in Africa avidly.
I was so excited when David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center, went to South Africa in 2003. Mr. Miscavige attended the grand opening of the Church of Scientology of Johannesburg — one of the first of a new breed of Scientology churches.
The biggest difference between these churches and Scientology churches in the past, apart from their beautifully renovated spaces (and they certainly are beautiful) is the emphasis on service to the community. A full third of the church spaces are dedicated to helping new people find out about Scientology and activities to help the community.
The Church of Scientology of Johannesburg has taken on the role of helping all the other Scientology activities in Africa.
